Layer 03 · Developmental stages
A longitudinal reference timeline.
Six stages, from early childhood to the formal transition age, give developmental context to each readiness indicator. Age ranges are approximate — the framework supports entry at any stage.

Early Childhood
≈ 3–5 years
Foundations of choice, expression, and participation in routines through play and family life.

Uses words, signs, gestures, or AAC to request, refuse, and comment.
R4 Personal Independence
Participates in dressing, feeding, and hygiene routines with support.
R5 Work Behaviors
Engages in short play-based 'jobs'; follows one- to two-step directions.
R6 Social Participation
Plays alongside and with peers; participates in group routines.
R7 Career Readiness
Notices what adults do; engages in pretend-work play.
R8 Family Partnership
Family establishes shared routines and high expectations within everyday life.

Childhood
≈ 6–9 years
Emerging self-awareness, responsibility-taking, and steady growth in social participation.

Completes age-appropriate self-care and simple household tasks.
R5 Work Behaviors
Completes assigned classroom and home tasks; persists with encouragement.
R6 Social Participation
Forms friendships; cooperates in group activities at school and in the neighbourhood.
R7 Career Readiness
Names familiar jobs; expresses early interests in activities.
R8 Family Partnership
Family supports growing responsibility and participates in school partnership.

Pre-Adolescence
≈ 10–12 years
Strengths and interests become more defined; community experiences widen the developmental field.
